[Quarter Final] Sweden Vs England

Here we go! The quarterfinalists Sweden and England are out on the field, singing their national anthems. Some empty seats in the stadium as Germany fans return back but England fans do not return in time for the matches.

The Starting XI for Sweden vs England, quarterfinal match is out! Gareth Southgate is featuring the same team as the winning one against Colombia. Dele Alli has cleared the fitness test. Here are the line-ups:

Football-mad Swedish vicar Ingo Soederlund will be hoping no extra time is needed on Saturday as he performs the wedding ceremony of a Swedish-English couple before the World Cup quarter-final between the two nations in Russia. Soederlund is due to perform the ceremony at the Grundsunds church north of Gothenburg for a Swedish bride and her English groom just 45 minutes before kickoff in Samara.

When placed in a group with Netherlands and Italy, Sweden were not expected to scape through the qualifying rounds, especially without their star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic. But the men in yellow shocked the world when they managed to find a spot in the 32 teams entering the tournament. If that was not all, Sweden also managed to reach the quarterfinal, after coming out from a group that had Germany and Mexico, and then defeated the World Ranking 6 team Switzerland to book a date with England. How long will the fairy tale continue for Sweden?

Sweden won the very first Women's European Championship back in 1984, when it defeated England 4-3 on penalties. The Swedes advanced past the quarterfinals in seven of its next eight appearances in the tournament but failed to capture a title, finishing as runner-up on three occasions. Sweden looks to take another step toward an elusive second crown when it faces England in the semifinals of the 2022 UEFA Women's Euro on Tuesday. The Swedes edged Belgium 1-0 in the quarters, while England squeaked past Spain 2-1 in extra time to earn is second straight trip to the semis.

The Lionesses have proven in this tournament that they are capable of winning in a variety of ways. They scored early against Austria in their first group-stage match and successfully protected the lead for a 1-0 triumph before routing Norway 8-0 and Northern Ireland 5-0. England then snatched victory from the jaws of defeat in the quarterfinals as Ella Toone forged a tie in the 84th minute before Georgia Stanway tallied in the 96th for a 2-1 win over Spain.

While England has given up just one goal through four matches, the Swedes also have played well defensively. Sweden surrendered one goal in each of its first two contests before posting back-to-back clean sheets against Portugal in the final group-stage game and Belgium in the quarterfinals. Linda Sembrant sent the Swedes back to the semifinals after they lost to the Netherlands in the 2017 quarters, scoring in the second minute of stoppage time against the Belgians to snap a scoreless tie.

Dele Alli and Harry Maguire headers were enough for England to book a semi-final berth after a 2-0 win over Sweden in their quarter-final clash on Saturday. Maguire's header had given England a slender 1-0 lead at halftime. Alli's second half header ensured England comfortably got past Sweden. A double save by English keeper Jordan Pickford kept England in the game. Both Marcus Berg's shots were blocked by Pickford as Sweden's best chances fell the striker's way. Earlier in the first half, Maguire had given England the lead in the 30th minute after a towering header off Ashley Young's corner kick. Raheem Sterling had the best chance to double England's lead but the Swedish keeper kept his team in the game going in the halftime. Before that, the early minutes saw a cagey start between them as neither teams tried to attack. After the initial slow start, both teams began to open up and made a few chances. England's Dele Alli won a good ball in the middle early on but his final pass meant for Harry Kane wasn't up to the mark. Kane again gave a looping pass to Sterling but that was dealt well by the Swedish defence. Sweden began to grow into the game but England kept their nerves. The first thirty minutes saw only one shot on target for England. England got the first corner of the match on the half-hour mark but it hardly troubled the Swedish keeper. "It's the biggest goal of my career, one of the biggest moments in my career too. To experience this, to fire Sweden into the quarter-finals together with this group, it feels fantastic," said Forsberg.

Host nation England is in the final and is hoping to win the tournament for the first time on home soil, having ousted another one of the favorites, Spain, in the quarterfinals and Sweden in the semis. The English women have never won a Euros tournament, finishing runners-up twice (1984 and 2009). 041b061a72
