How to use Vijeo Designer 6.2 to create HMI applications

Vijeo Designer 6.2 is a powerful software tool that allows you to design and develop human-machine interface (HMI) applications for various Schneider Electric devices, such as Magelis terminals, industrial PCs, and web gateways. With Vijeo Designer 6.2, you can create intuitive and dynamic graphical interfaces that enable users to interact with machines and processes in a safe and efficient way.

In this article, we will show you how to use Vijeo Designer 6.2 to create a simple HMI application that displays and controls some variables from a PLC. We will assume that you have already installed Vijeo Designer 6.2 on your computer and that you have a compatible device connected to your PLC.

Step 1: Create a new project

To create a new project in Vijeo Designer 6.2, follow these steps:

  • Launch Vijeo Designer 6.2 from the Start menu or the desktop shortcut.

  • Click on File > New Project to open the New Project Wizard.

  • Enter a name for your project and select the device type and model that you want to use. For this example, we will use a Magelis XBT GT 5.7" terminal.

  • Click on Next to configure the communication settings. Select the protocol and the port that match your PLC connection. For this example, we will use Modbus TCP/IP over Ethernet.

  • Click on Next to configure the screen settings. You can adjust the screen resolution, orientation, color depth, and backlight settings according to your preferences.

  • Click on Finish to create your project and open it in the Vijeo Designer 6.2 workspace.

Step 2: Define the variables

To define the variables that you want to display and control in your HMI application, follow these steps:

  • In the Vijeo Designer 6.2 workspace, click on the Variables node in the Project Browser pane.

  • Click on the Add button to open the Add Variable dialog box.

  • Enter a name for your variable and select the data type that matches your PLC variable. For this example, we will use a Boolean variable named Lamp.

  • Click on the Communication tab and select the communication protocol that you configured in step 1. For this example, we will use Modbus TCP/IP.

  • Enter the address of your PLC variable in the Device Address field. For this example, we will use %M0 for Lamp.

  • Click on OK to add your variable to the project.

  • Repeat these steps to add more variables as needed. For this example, we will also add an Integer variable named Counter with address %MW0.

Step 3: Design the screen

To design the screen that will display and control your variables in your HMI application, follow these steps:

  • In the Vijeo Designer 6.2 workspace, click on the Screens node in the Project Browser pane.

  • Double-click on Screen_1 to open it in the Screen Editor pane.

  • Use the Toolbox pane to drag and drop various objects onto your screen, such as buttons, lamps, numeric displays, etc.

  • Use the Properties pane to customize the appearance and behavior of each object, such as size, color, font, text, etc.

  • To link an object to a variable, select the object and click on the Link button in the Properties pane. Then select the variable that you want to link from the list of available variables.

  • To test your screen design, click on the Simulation button in the toolbar. You can then interact with your screen objects and see how they affect your variables and vice versa.

  • To exit the simulation mode, click on the Stop button in the toolbar.

Step 4: Download and run your HMI application

To download and run your HMI application on your device, follow these steps:

In the Vijeo Designer 6.2 workspace, click on Build > Build All to compile your project and generate an executable file. 06063cd7f5
